What was the highlight of Hotel Catedral Funchal
Booking errors didn't bode well but we worked around that. Madeira is delightful.
Very central. Walking distance to many attractions, mainly a plethora of eateries.
Extremely difficult to locate the entrance. Even a policeman 100 metres away had never heard of the hotel....this is mainly because there was no 'frontage' per se just a single door entrance wedged between two shops. The overhead sign for Hotel Catedral was in very stylised cursive writing, barely legible thus: 'Hcatedral'. The safe was not of the combination type but old fashioned key in the lock type, except there was no key. On requesting the key I was charged 10 euros, non refundable. Madeira is famed for its friendly natives and we found this to be the case, perhaps less so in the hotel. They were efficient enough but one felt that they were just going through the motions. At reception one expects to find leaflets on local attractions/excursions etc. There was nothing of the sort There had been either a misunderstanding or an error in my booking. I booked a double room for my wife and I to spend our wedding anniversary. Two days before the flight, on looking closer at the confirmation, I realised Booking.com had booked two rooms, both featuring twin beds, so wrong on both counts. I spent a lot of time on the telephone back and fore between the hotel and Booking.com and back again in a loop. I asked to have just one room, preferably with a double, but if none available, just give us one of the rooms in my name and cancel the other one. Booking.com were polite and helpful, but there was more misunderstanding. Both rooms were cancelled, I received a full refund, but no booking. So when I questioned this with the hotel (not interested.....go to Booking.com) and then learnt that what you termed as a 'new booking' had shot up in price to be almost as much for one room as I had paid earlier for two! This was a very frustrating afternoon. I had little choice but to book into a different hotel, the Hotel Catedral which was 3 star rather than the original 4 and more costly than the original cost for one double 4-star.

Good
Located in the city center of Funchal. Despite being in a very lively neighbourhood, the night was very calm and quiet. Modern and clean bathroom. Very friendly staff!
The rooms are quite old-fashioned and in need of a make-over. There was only a single power outlet in the whole room!

Great value and location, would stay again.
Great breakfast, good quality. Location couldn't be better, easy to come and go during the day. Staff very approachable and friendly.
Room was a touch small- but we were out and about all the time, so didn't really matter.

Frendily staff, ideal location and comforable stay all around.
The location was the best selling feature: centrally located in Funchal, with short walks to all major historical landmarks. While the hotel was a little dated aesthetically, it had all the conveniences and attentive staff to make our stay comfortable and unencumbered.
A little dated aesthetically; could do with a modernization and the breakfast area was a little cramped. Generally acceptable given the location and the service.
